Brown Universities International Advanced Research Institutes initiative (BIARI) brings together young faculty and professionals from around the world to address pressing global issues through innovative research and pedagogy.
Since June 2009, with the generous support of Santander Universities, over 500 scholars and practitioners from more than 75 countries have participated in two-week intensive institutes on Brown Universitys campus in Providence, Rhode Island. They are now members of a dynamic alumni community whose members continue to collaborate and share knowledge.
In June 2012, members of Brown University internationally-acclaimed faculty will again convene a diverse group of future intellectual leaders from the global South, together with prominent thinkers and practitioners, to participate in four two-week residential institutes.
The objective of the BIARI program is to provide a platform for promising young faculty from the global South and emerging economies to engage in a high-level and sustained intellectual and policy dialogue with leading scholars in their fields and each other. Institutes foster scholarly networks among young faculty, while providing them with an opportunity to develop their scholarship agendas.
This ambitious program is designed to provide needed professional development opportunities for young scholars embarking on lives in research and teaching. The Brown International Advanced Research Institutes are a fundamental plank in President Ruth Simmons' vision for Brown's continuing internationalization. The BIARI program aims to make a significant contribution to global research through transnational academic collaboration, promoting Brown University's vision of the global university.
Each Institute is organized as a mix of lectures, round table discussions, group work, field trips, cultural events and social interactions. Each is led by a team of distinguished Brown faculty who have invited world-renowned lecturers and speakers to join and participate in the Institute's formal and informal activities. Institutes are residential, with accommodations and meals provided.
